Ida Apartment
Reflecting the eclectic and industrial nature of Bozeman's north side, this is the first phase of a larger project. Although destined to act as garage and rental apartment for a main residence, this 728 square foot, 2 bedroom self-contained unit stands on its own as a small residence. While the owners' next phase is several years away, this first phase has been designed to be ready to expand with minimal modification.
All the exterior materials are designed to be maintenance free, and the interiors are comfortable and durable. The charred wood (Shou-Sugi-Ban) siding on the exterior will lighten slightly as it ages and patinas, while the charring process seals and protects the wood. The base of custom cast concrete panels provides added protection at the ground level, and the brick and steel accents round out a palette that fits with the industrial history of this North-side neighborhood. The home's heating and hot water are supplied by a geothermal heat pump utilizing two wells on site, which will ultimately serve the entire future house. The stained concrete flooring inside provides a durable and colorful flooring solution, and the upper deck provides great outdoor space on an otherwise limited lot.
