Little John Residence

Designed for a couple with varying aesthetic ideals, the design of this residence blends the opposing traditional and modern preferences of its owners into a harmonious, transitional house. Located on a large wooded lot, the Little John Residence is approached along a gravel drive, the front façade framed by the towering trunks of old pines. The house itself, clad in stone and capped with a red tile roof, is impressive without being imposing.

Inside, the generously-scaled home is centered around a love of entertaining—particularly for large groups. Visitors, greeted in a bright Entry hall, may catch a glimpse into the adjacent Dining Room or even the Wine Room beyond. Passing through the Gallery, with its wide arches and series of groin vaults, the ceiling of the Family Room is revealed: antique 100-year old reclaimed oak beams add warmth and sense of timelessness to the space. The wood ceilings add continuity as one circulates into the large Kitchen or enjoys the more intimate proportions of the Sun Room.

At the other end of the Gallery, a grand elliptical stair denotes the transition from the public to private wings of the house. The Master Suite provides an escape for the owners, including a glassy sitting room and luxurious bath. The wood-paneled Library is conveniently nearby, balancing the need for separation with proximity for its use as a working office. Upstairs, secondary bedrooms and unexpected amenities—a fully-equipped workout room and media room—are less formal than the first floor public areas.

Whether filled with guests for a lively celebration or occupied by only its owners on a Tuesday night, the blend of large and small spaces in the Little John Residence offers a welcoming and comfortable retreat.
