Seward Residence
A stand alone house on a family farm near Brenham, Texas is the focus of an informal compound of buildings. The house was sited along a bluff to accommodate additional buildings while taking advantage of a sweeping view to the north. The house is connected to the garage by a curved breezeway overlooking a pool that follows the natural curve of the bluff. A sunken fence creates a drop in grade along the bluff line, protecting the house from the adjacent cow pasture without obstructing the view or creating artificial barriers.Interiors are designed as a relaxing haven and are a backdrop for the owners’ collection of antique furnishings. The living space on the second floor, floats serenely above the landscape, opening to dramatic views in three directions. Exteriors are clad in Corten steel panels, applied like bent-up shingles that create changing shadows as the sun moves throughout the day. The effect recalls the rusted barns that dot the landscape in this area, and the dark color contrasts the bright interiors, with ceilings and soffits painted a particular “Magritte” blue to bring the color of the vast sky indoors.
