Mid-Century Makeover
Extensive renovations to this architecturally significant Mid-century residence were made to open the floor plan, re-capture underutilized space, update finishes, and reduce energy use. The first target was a mudroom addition which detracted from the otherwise architecturally interesting home and was so poorly conditioned that it was virtually unusable. In the same footprint, the team created a highly-insulated space with a welcoming entrance and eat-in dining area that opens to the gardens. While generously sized, the kitchen felt dark and did not provide logical flow for a busy cook. The renovated kitchen features a “kitchen within a kitchen” that contains cooking within a core which overlooks bar seating, an open stairwell to the newly created multi-media family-room below, and expansive views outside. To address circulation and flow, we created a new axis from the main house to the kitchen/addition that terminates at a wood burning stove. Systems include geo-thermal, radiant flooring, and solar thermal.
