Midcentury Modern Living
This family room design is a stunning transformation for a busy family of four. We were originally contacted by the clients to propose some soft design and furniture suggestions for the room, but the project took on a much larger scope as we continued to identify the clients' needs. To create an updated and durable design, we removed all of the dated hardwood flooring and replaced it with porcelain wood-look planks. Given that this room is a secondary living space that receives high traffic, this was an ideal material choice. We then designed a custom, 17' long walnut wood unit which was built by H&M Designs. This unit looks simple but houses extra deep storage drawers that pull out to expose lots of toy storage for the clients' two children. The unit also features recessed lights that shine focus on the family's 'music nook'. New ceiling lighting was integrated as well, and all systems were updated to wireless dimming switches. In the far corner of the living space, we created a fun play area for the kids to create art and socialize. This includes a gorgeous parson table with bright blue legs, a Flor rug, and a recessed storage cabinet that actually provides armoire storage for variously sized objects. A custom glass marker board was mounted above the play area for creative doodling. Our biggest and most exciting integration was the intstallation of Modular Arts 3-dimensional gypsum panels along the center feature wall. These dynamic panels exhibit the texture of crumpled paper and provide a uniquely beautiful surface in the focal area of the room. The space is finished with an extra large custom sofa from Room and Board, as well as a gorgeous wood coffee table from Aulia. We love the innovative and dramatic simplicity of this space, backed by the function it will provide for years to come!
