Mudroom + Pantry
Design Challenge: Designing a traditional kitchen while creating an updated open concept overall. Utilizing the large space without making it feel oversized.
• Congested work triangle
• Angled walls
• Brick wall closing off kitchen from the living room
Client Design Requirements:
• Warm & inviting
• Open concept
• Professional appliances
• Two cook kitchen
• Snack bar seating
• Beverage bar
• Display cabinets
Design Inspiration: The angled walls created an opportunity to create a fun shaped island. Living on the lake and hosting large family gatherings demanded a kitchen with multiple work stations.
Design Solution: Removing the walls dividing the kitchen from the living room opened up the kitchen adding full views of the lake. Designing specific cabinets to the 9ft ceiling height helped balance the large size of the kitchen. Moving a doorway and opening up a walk-in pantry redistributed the space to create separate work stations for more than one cook and helpers. The angled island housed the baking center and microwave drawer while supporting a snack bar with a view of the lake. The multi-level design put the microwave at a comfortable height and helped camouflage its large size. The corner glass wall cabinet created a focal place to display special china. The glass mullian door cabinets above the beverage bar keep all the old glassware on display as well. The selection of cherry cabinetry with the accents of bead board and mullian doors gives the kitchen the character of a warm and inviting place to gather with friends and family.
