Plano l A 1990s Updated Kitchen
As the original owner of a model home built in 1993, the client was ready to update their crowded, dark kitchen. A pony wall separated the kitchen from the family room, making it feel closed off. An awkward, oversized island blocked the flow throughout the space, and misplaced windows made certain areas dark and dreary. Because the client loves to entertain family and friends, they were looking for a kitchen that was inviting, bright, open and functional while staying within tight budget constraints.
Up for the challenge, Kitchen, Bath and Home began by taking out the pony wall creating a cohesive space with the family room. Then, we replaced the original island with a larger, more functional island offering both work and gathering spaces. Kitchen, Bath and Home moved one of the windows in the breakfast nook to the other end of the kitchen to provide natural light as well as visual symmetry. The breakfast nook was replaced with a dry bar giving the owners an easily accessible place to set up a drink or dessert station. And finally, bright paint, light stained wood and more functional cabinet storage combined with a new layout created the look, feel and flow the client truly desired.
Some specific challenges Kitchen, Bath and Home faced along the way:
Concern: Loss of second oven.
Resolution: Replaced the double oven with a 30” SKS range with so much space inside they can place two cookie sheets side-by-side.
Concern: New, larger TV would not fit in the original family room built-ins.
Solution: The built-in was reconfigured to accommodate the new TV and offer better storage and display space.
Concern: Budget.
Solution: Reusing existing items such as windows and bricks to help stay within the budget constraints.
All the changes made, although significant, look natural, as if they have been in the house all along. Worried they would miss their kitchen table, they realized they now use the island for casual meals or a quick card game with guests and admit it has encouraged them to use their previously under-utilized dining room more and more. The clients light up when talking about their newly remodeled kitchen, and although the updates were 30 years in the making, they couldn’t be happier with the end results. We hope they enjoy their new, beautiful kitchen for at least another 30 years.
