Springland Lane Kitchen

The renovation of this Cleveland Park house focuses on the sensitive reconfiguration of existing space to provide a contemporary feel within a traditional home. A former apartment unit, adjacent to the existing kitchen, was combined with the main house, providing the family with a generous kitchen/ family room. Trim details, built-in storage, and coffered ceilings at the new spaces give a sense of rhythm and order. A new mud room connects the foyer to the kitchen to better serve the functional needs of the client’s young family. Other architectural elements that had compartmentalized existing spaces were removed to allow for a more logical flow from room to room, to introduce long views, and to encourage the presence of natural light. While the client desired some contemporary, family-friendly spaces, they also hoped to maintain the traditional massing of the house and to redefine the distinct character of the original formal rooms. The project achieved this goal by carefully rethinking relationships between spaces and by introducing details that blur the line between traditional and modern.
