Veggies, fruit, & relaxation
This yard began with 2 lawn areas on two levels surrounded by a cement block retaining wall. The goal was to add various usable "rooms," use less water but add plenty of fruit trees & planting areas for vegetables, hide the retaining wall & make the whole yard more aesthetically pleasing. The elevation change of the retaining wall helped us create a natural-looking stream with 2 waterfalls, one facing a new dining area patio, one near the fire pit's built-in stone seat wall. We hid the retaining wall along the south side with a meandering dry stack wall, creating a 40' long veggie bed. An arbor with shade cloth shields the family room inside from the sun & provides a sitting area with a hanging swing. A patio with a tall table & chairs near the outdoor kitchen is perfect for appetizers & keeping the cook company. Curved bluestone pathways lined with Dymondia & Laurentia connect the areas. The yard's bounty includes pears, apples, nectarines, figs, apricots, huckleberries, chilean guavas, pineapple guavas, blueberries, & raspberries
