Phasing renovations gives homeowners the chance to get a feel for how they use and inhabit their homes, particularly with growing children. The clients of this home in suburban Newton began with a renovated kitchen and family room addition in the rear of the house, creating a new mudroom and powder room and a more open, visually connected first floor. Upstairs, the master suite was expanded with a new master bath and children’s bedrooms were reconfigured for more space and improved layouts. Following phases included the renovation of the screen porch and office/homework areas that both bookend the first floor. In the basement, a new media room/play space was created with a dance studio, powder room, storage and a custom wine cellar.

The interiors were designed to be practical for a growing family, while also embracing the family’s playful nature. Rich colors are balanced with natural textures and family mementos to create a uniquely personal home.
