The homeowners were disappointed to have to remove a number of mature trees due to the front yard septic system. Their removal not only created a deficit of both curb appeal and green views from the home's windows, but also highlighted the strangeness of a seemingly arbitrary dry streambed that split into three different directions.

To remedy the structure of the space, the streambed was reworked to achieve a point of origin and then flow to a termination point in a more natural and harmonious way.

Next, a thoughtful planting design used plant groupings and the layering in of small trees, shrubs, groundcover, and perennials of various heights to create interest, furnish color and textural impact. The homeowners were seeking low-water use plants that attract pollinators, and wanted native desert globemallow (Sphaeralcea ambigua) specifically to supply their adopted desert tortoise with its natural food source.

Existing, sizable golden barrel cactus, Echinocactus grusonii, as well as large boulders, were considered a bonus, already on site and easily worked into the new design.

The result is a cohesive, more integrated garden, easily enjoyed whether looking outside from inside the home, driving up to at the end of the day, or gathering snacks for their hungry desert tortoise!
