An inherited backyard landscape received some fine tuning to better reflect the client's lifestyle. Although the previous homeowners had the paving, pergola, and planting professionally designed and installed, the current homeowner wished to make the space more her own. The patio was there, but it was never used.

The first improvement made--upgrading the block walls to stucco--changed the look and feel immediately. This is a recommendation regularly made because the difference is truly dramatic. (See the Before photos to get the full effect!)

Then, editing the existing planting made it possible to create more visual layers. By incorporating flowering shrubs and perennials, I was able to soften the strong structure while taking the edge off of the overly rigid and somewhat stark existing planting, allowing the space to become more inviting to both people and visiting hummingbirds. "I actually sit out here now!" the current homeowner said.

Two custom raised vegetable beds now make use of the space adjacent to the patio, which, once planted, will furnish fresh, fragrant herbs and seasonal vegetables while still allowing access to the HVAC units.
