A 117-square foot constricted galley kitchen becomes part of the house by removing one load-bearing wall.
This couple loves their small ranch and neighborhood, so they were willing to spend a little extra to have exactly what they wanted: vintage meets contemporary.
A single wall (housing an unworkable pocket door from the ‘50s) was removed, which exposed a header. The sagging dining room ceiling demonstrated that the existing header wasn’t doing its job. A larger header was installed with a supportive post on the exterior wall, which was unable to be recessed.
This single feature defines both the charm of this kitchen and the necessity to have a carefully optimized cabinet layout.
Hidden behind a cabinet panel is the LED transformer, which is above the upper that butts up to the bottom of the header. A single-bottle-wide wine rack slides in comfortably behind the base cabinet, which is made shallow by the supportive post. Any storage lost to the elimination of uppers is picked up by a floor-to-ceiling cabinet with the depth of one canned good, which sits on the vanishing point of the long view.
Many visually intriguing design elements invigorate this kitchen. Classic white brick, buoyed by 3-D geometry and fine line pinstriping, clads the entire room. With its big bold pattern, encaustic tile animates the floor. Black mullions in the new exterior windows are repeated in the mullions of the cabinetry. The deep charcoal matte cabinetry is not only visually engaging, but soft to the touch as well.
A cluster of pendants cleverly combines large black hoops with over-scaled, laser-etched Edison bulbs suspended in their centers. Satin gold finishes take charge in the vintage cabinet hardware, faucet, and accessories.
Wrapped in American Walnut and effortlessly coordinating with the existing wood flooring, it is ultimately the header that frames this space. Three cantilevered shelves take the place of wall cabinets that we were unable to use due to the supportive post, a choice that seems naturally intentional rather than a design solution. Upon closer look, black bolt heads give the appearance of mechanical fasteners. But they are actually an applique, adding another detail to further the retro, steampunk vibe.
