It's So Niche
When a family of two adults and two young teens has only one 43-square foot bathroom to share – and it hasn’t been updated since the ‘50’s – some creative design reimagining is in order.
Essentially Jack-and-Jill style, the bathroom has two doors. One serves the master suite which includes the bedroom, walk-through closet, and meditation room, a unique feature for a Buddhist family. The other door allows access from the house through a common hallway.
Extending the bathroom into the walk-through closet doubled the space but required the removal of a load-bearing wall supporting the weight of two headers: one for the original house and another abutting header that had been built during a subsequent addition to the home.
Following the header is the key to understanding this space. On one side, the header is visually supported by a floor-to-ceiling niche clad in contrasting blue tile. On the other side it is met with a warm-toned wood column.
A generous 72” vanity with a 48” trough sink easily serves two at a time. An LED edge lit mirror provides ample lighting without taking up wall space for sconces. A four-drawer cabinet gives every family member their own drawer, while a 15” upper is a bonus.
An immovable toilet location forces it to become a focal point. Cantilevered shelves flank the toilet, with one shelf for each family member plus two more for knick knacks. A 6” deep toilet topper stores the essentials. The wall-hung toilet allows for the shower to be 8” wider than the original tub, while a bidet seat with remote control brings a touch of techno luxury.
The finishes are artisan, with an earthy quality. The tile edges are hand cut, while the deco tiles are hand painted. The shower floor pebbles are naturally domed. Faux polished concrete flooring and slab are contemporary and natural without being too slick.
Neutral grays allow even the subtlest colors to stand out. Gray blue walls and deep navy cabinets emphasize the Buddhist principle of transforming anger into mirror-like wisdom. Brushed gold plumbing, lighting, and cabinet hardware introduce a sparkling element to an otherwise contemplative palette.
With a clear path through the space, soothing colors, and a multitude of storage options, this bathroom has found its true niche in the family home.
