Bratton Residence
This 5,200 square foot renovation and addition transforms a 1950’s suburban house into an elegant, contemporary home of light filled spaces layered with rich materials around a sunny entry courtyard. The owner’s program included an enlarged new entry gallery, new kitchen, new bathrooms, and cosmetic upgrades throughout the living, dining, utility, craft and dressing rooms. The architects found inspiration in the chevron ‘V’ shape of the existing floor plan and the references to ‘mid-century modernism’ in the well constructed, yet outdated home.
The new entry sequence begins at the street with a steel and stucco gate, through a long tree lined drive, ending in a circular, integrally colored concrete drop-off area, scored in the axial geometries. A raised concrete path leads through the entry courtyard, past a shimmering steel fountain, a sculpture garden, a contemplation bench, and bridges across a reflecting pool. The entry door, a Mondrian pattern of aniegre wood inlaid with steel, is set on a floating platform of honed golden stone.
The new entry gallery glows from broad horizontal bands of glass, a raised ceiling and clerestory windows. The golden stone floor, polished inside, terminates at the composed rear wall of the living room fireplace - a stainless steel box and floating aniegre shelf against a hand plastered wall, subtly divided with aluminum channels.
Deep red walls embrace the living room with warmth and tall pairs of glass doors are topped with a thick display ledge and new clerestory windows. Plaster from the entry side wraps to engage the wide fireplace, with a stainless steel and floating aniegre mantle. The polished golden stone hearth floats above the blackened floor, suspending the massive wall in compliment to the hovering steel rings of the central chandelier.
The outdated kitchen was enlarged and replanned with stainless steel and polished granite counters, aniegre cabinets and two elliptical columns clad in black glass mosaic tiles, creating a dynamic tension between the kitchen, the bar and the family sitting area. Thickened areas of the walls are plastered, the bar counter raised and skewed.
The aniegre cabinetry continue into the new master bath, both as cabinets and as thickened wall pieces, providing display areas and substance. Texas brush limestone flows from the floor onto the walls of the generous new glass shower and granite counters exhibit their jewels in the tilted form of the raised ceramic sinks.
