Wood Residence

In an affluent community south of San Francisco, this new 4,400 square foot home recedes into the center of its site, nestled into its south facing slope. By a simple rotation the house turns blank walls to the neighboring homes and opens wide to protected views. A detached three car garage is connected to the house by a covered breezeway and quiet garden with a sloping stone wall and a beautiful Japanese maple tree. A gray slate walkway leads to the front door past birch trees and a curving black steel fence. The crisp form of the house is achieved by the use of tightly spaced vertical wood siding and integrally colored stucco that layer the forms against one another in varying shades of taupe.

The living, dining, kitchen, study, powder and master suite are located on the main floor with wide expanses of glass to the views. Modulated ceiling shapes give definition and division between spaces that are open and flow together. Rooms spill out onto a large curving wood deck with glass panel railings which disappear against the view. At the lower floor the family, guest bedrooms, laundry and workshop are reached by a curving stairway with tall windows to a broad, protected view into the gardens.

The front door is fabricated in maple, cherry, ebony and stainless steel with flanking panels of sandblasted glass. It opens into a large hall topped with a pyramidal skylight and cherry insets in the oak flooring. A cylindrical cherry column frames the passage into the vaulted living/dining area where maple paneling on the ceiling glows over the bold, simple shape of the rooms. The fireplace and large screen television are carefully composed and capped with a cherry mantle. Cherry cabinetry and granite counters at the wet bar continue into the kitchen and in the powder where they become sculpted art pieces. With windows on three sides the kitchen and its adjacent seating area is bathed in natural light. The master bedroom is skewed to orient the bed towards the view. A glass partition separates the bedroom from the tub, where large swaths of glass continue uninterrupted. The soft peach colored marble counter brings a touch of color to compliment the subdued hues of the limestone floor.
