Schein Residence

Perched on the northern crest of a hill overlooking the San Francisco Bay, this 2,200 square foot remodel and addition transforms a 1950’s ranch house into a dramatic new home layered with bold colors and a rich palette of contrasting materials. The original home had flat roofs with deep overhangs and the interior spaces were dark, poorly lit and filled with outdated fixtures and appliances in a neutral beige color scheme. The owner’s program included the addition of a new family room, powder room, entry courtyard and a new rear deck. Interior changes involved fully gutting and rebuilding the kitchen, relocating the entry, upgrading the living and dining rooms and a new color scheme throughout.

The entry was moved to the side of the house to create a procession between the garage and the house. The existing breezeway roof was opened to pour light into a serene entry courtyard created by a series of red wood slatted screens, soft moss and circular concrete stepping stones. A hand troweled plaster wall in a deep melon color pulls one naturally into the new entry where a black slatted wood bench penetrates the window beside the new maple door onto African slate flooring.

The new family room engages the living/dining room to become a large space comfortably divided into separate areas by sculpted elements - a crisp hand troweled fireplace in the deep melon color, maple walls gridded with aluminum channels, and changes in ceiling materials and colors. Oak flooring throughout is stained a dark charcoal gray and the existing ceiling is completely transformed with its new deep red color. A series of floating maple shelves are supported by a maple clad wall and a steel column. The kitchen is enlarged and replanned with new stainless steel appliances, new lighting and a combination of green laminate and maple cabinetry. A large pass through opening links the kitchen to the dining room, capturing views to the Bay. The new powder room consists of a long, sleek custom stainless steel counter with integral sink, black mosaic tiles and a black toilet. The dark charcoal gray siding and deep red on the doors and exposed wood eaves as well as the stainless steel cable railings with red wood posts and cap at the new deck all blend into a harmonious flow from inside to outside in this metamorphosis from bland to bold.
