Casa de Nueva Esperanza

Nestled into the quiet middle of a block in the historic center of the beautiful colonial town of San Miguel de Allende, this new 1,800 square foot home and 1,300 square foot art studio is accessed through a series of gardens and courtyards. Pairs of hand crafted tall steel doors with geometric curving lines and dimpled markings offer separate access to both the main house and the art studio. The living, dining, kitchen, powder and master suite as well as the art studio is located on the ground floor open separated by a series of patios that flood each space with light that changes throughout the day. Tall ceilings, wide expanse of glass and hewn wooden beams sculpt the ceilings, reflecting light from the mango colored accent wall. An organic, winding stairway with wavelike iron railings arcs over the entryway and provides a strong connection to the second floor.

Guest quarters, an office, and the studio mezzanine are located on the second floor along with covered terraces with views to the surrounding neighborhood. Wide expanses of windows on opposite sides of the living room capture the rays of sunlight throughout the day. The sunny kitchen with its silver stained cabinetry and grey colored concrete counters bar opens directly to the dining room with its wood beamed ceilings. A sculpted silver headboard provides a stunning backdrop to the bed on one side while providing privacy to the open dressing area behind. The master bath is designed as a sculpture of concrete planes and glass block with organic curving concrete counters. A sensuous sky lit shower with wall-to-wall windows opens into a private garden. A curving stairway leads up to the roof terrace for intimate gatherings with spectacular views over the San Miguel skyline.

Spaces are revealed gradually, by surprise, bound by focused geometries. There is a spiritual pull to discover what lies behind the walls, and an invitation to pause in each space. Constantly changing light imbues this home with a translucent tie to the cosmos. This is a home born of the land, set apart by its boldness, yet enveloped intimately by its surroundings, harmony in the forms washed with constantly changing light.
