Glanz Remodel
Perched on the eastern slopes of Russian Hill with breathtaking views to the San Francisco skyline and Bay, this newly remodeled 600 square foot condominium glows with warm colors and sculptural forms. One of a hundred units in a 1950's residential complex, the dated and uninspired interior offered little more than it's spectacular views. Cramped and awkward spaces overlooked a small deck and adjacent roofing. Mirrors had been added by a previous owner in an attempt to expand the space, yet the result was a confusing, multiplication of dull and unattractive walls. The owner desired a dynamic new look to reflect his tastes and accommodate his needs.
The remodel began with demolition of everything, stripping the space back to the studs, removing the walls surrounding the kitchen and bathroom and removal of all the cabinets, closets, fixtures, and flooring. The demolition alone transformed the space from a warren of tiny rooms. Every opportunity was taken to open it up to the light and views. A softly curving wood counter embraces new gray/green concrete counters over maple cabinetry. A bold burgundy column is all that is needed to separate the kitchen from the living. A study area was added adjacent to the kitchen within a long wall of sculpted cabinets. It fills a multitude of functions while expanding the space visually. A bold arch and stepped, staggered cabinet with integral counter areas, flipper doors to hide the TV and stereo, and glass panels with artfully lit interiors add an enormous sense of volume and dimension. The wall between the living and bedroom was cut, shaped and carved to provide space for art, flowers and objects and to filter light through a thin strip of patterned, sandblasted glass and matching glass door. What had been a cramped bathroom is now a gracious and comfortable space with a generous shower of limestone walls tapering to an integral seat. The rosy terra-cotta concrete bath counter, soft yellow walls and limestone floor are infused with richness by beautifully selected and focused lighting.
A gentle geometry of angled and curving forms are integrated into a palette of soft, warm materials. The blend of naturally finished maple and cherry cabinets with subtly colored concrete and wood counters is complementary to the stark stainless steel appliances. The flooring, a specially fabricated plank of recycled wood from Finland, is reminiscent of California grasses and provides an earthy yet clean background. San Francisco's comfortable, temperate climate invited the expansion of the small deck into a spacious terrace from the living room. The eastern exposure offered the opportunity to capture the sparkle of San Francisco's brilliant sunlight and flood the new interior with color and warmth.
