The existing kitchen was nice, back in 1998 - custom-built cherry cabinets, black granite countertops, and aging commercial appliances. Those could be easily remedied, but what was a little more challenging was the oddly proportioned space. It's long and narrow proportions made parts of the kitchen feel cramped, while other areas felt too open and unused. It was an odd situation, as poorly laid out kitchens either feel too cramped or too spacious, but rarely both.
Sometimes opening up a kitchen in an older home is difficult, as layout options can be limited by a nearby stairway or a mudroom or side entrance that can't be easily relocated. But what made this project compelling was that it could be easily modified and connected with the adjacent dining and living rooms. With some careful and key adjustments, this kitchen would be amazing.
