Bungalow Expanded
The owners of this 1920s bungalow wanted to retain the charm and character of their house while increasing their living space by more than 50%. The existing three-bedroom house with a small, dark interior sat on a large corner lot in an established neighborhood of modest craftsman bungalows.
The resulting design features a great room addition combining the living room, dining room and kitchen into a single, light-filled volume which takes advantage of the prominent southern and western exposures. The existing living room was converted into a gracious foyer which serves as a point of separation between the public and private spaces of the house.
The expanded house fits comfortably with its smaller neighbors. A large porch organizes the entry façade while contributing to the tradition of grand porches in Takoma Park. A projected bay at the dining room recalls the scale and proportion of several neighboring cottages and reduces the perceived bulk of the house.
