The homeowners were attracted to this house because of its modern bones, exposed stained wood ceilings on the main floor, and the deep lot with large, mature trees. In addition to improving upon the floor plan, which consisted mostly of small, compartmentalized rooms, the homeowners were eager to brighten up the interior, darkened by the wood ceilings and a general lack of natural light.

The new design celebrates the wood ceilings and the existing brick fireplace by removing all the partitions between the kitchen, dining and living rooms, retaining the brick chimney as the central focus within the public areas of the house. The open plan fully exposes the ceiling, creating a pavilion feel for this space. By reversing the kitchen and dining room locations, the kitchen has more exterior wall space for cabinets and appliances and is centrally located between the dining and living areas. New windows and full-light sliding doors increase the natural light and visually expand the interior into the surrounding mature landscape.

A renovated foyer provides distinction to the entry from both the exterior and the interior, with new full-light doors, transom windows, and exterior roof canopy. Inside the new foyer, old partitions and railings were replaced with new low walls and lighter cable railing to expand the view inward and upward upon entering the home.

Both bathrooms have been renovated with new finishes, fixtures, windows and an added skylight. New clad wood windows, metal roofing and mahogany siding bring the 1960's exterior up to date, keeping it in step with the interior upgrades.
