Shingle Style

The project is a new 8,000 square foot residence on a one-acre lot in an established neighborhood just outside Washington, D.C. The L-shaped plan is a response to the project’s siting on a corner lot, creating two prominent public facades while enclosing an intimate rear garden. The formal southern facade fronts the more heavily-traveled of the two streets while also speaking to the formal living, dining and library spaces beyond. The western facade includes a corner porch which serves as the daily entrance for the owners.

The first and second floor plans are organized along two perpendicular axes of circulation which converge at the projected stair tower. On the first floor the distinct circulation also defines a clear separation between the formal spaces used primarily for entertaining and the casual family room and kitchen area.

Cedar shingles and locally quarried stone evoke the clients’ New England roots and acknowledge the setting of mature oaks and poplars.
