Capitol Hill Exterior Color

On Capitol Hill, there are many townhouses and other residences in the historic district, and adjacent areas, needing exterior painting. These projects are opportunities for color transformation, to bring out architectural details, and update the homes. Tech Painting Company is one of the painting contractors for whom I do paint color consultations. These homes in this folder were color consultation projects referred to me by Tech Painting, and completed in 2022 through 2024. I do also work directly with clients using other contractors for their painting projects.

Before: This Capitol HIll town house had insufficient contrast to the exterior, in relation to the trim color. It no longer worked well with the color of the house to the left, which had been re-painted a soft gold, and it lacked the strength of the house to the right.

Before: When the neighbor on the left painted their house a strong teal with chocolate and white accents, the three distinctive houses no longer felt harmonious. The two houses on the right needed updating, and resolved to coordinate their colors.

The two neighbors met with me individually, but were determined to come up with a cohesive plan for both houses. The house on the right had lost some of the metal appliques applied to the Oriel Bow Window.

This house also had a lower courtyard, which the others did not have. They knew the neighbor on the right wanted their house to be mostly white, and were unsure what color would work between a white house and the teal house.

In the lower courtyard, the unpainted brick window sill at the bottom pf the window made no sense to me. Security grilles were white, but the window one was rusty. This was not an inviting space at the moment.

Before: the house on the right had experimented with making the Oriel Bow window whiter, and decided they wanted the whole house white, with the bow window having some seafoam green or similar soft green color to bring it out in contrast. They were uncertain of other details.

This historic home is part of a group of highly photographed residences on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. Unlike the previous much brighter blue color, this new paint color is more grayed and more sophisticated.

Wrought iron is found throughout Capitol Hill; re-painting it is a part of many projects, and was a part of this one. Most townhouses, however, do not have the large front yards found in this neighborhood. From a distance the front step color also worked well with the concrete sidewalk.

Before: The client confessed she never really liked the previous color. She had expected a more muted color, and this one always seemed too bright. This historic home is one of a group of homes highly photographed, and even found on a brochure of the local tourism board.

One distinctive architectural detail of this house which I felt could be enhanced was the decorative use of corbels as a part of these handsome cornices over each window and the front door.

Before: Small corbels were also found visually supporting the soffit beneath the roofline. These created a rhythm and movement similar to that created by dentil moulding, but differently. Some color contrast could bring out the corbels, so they were more easily noticed.
