Clarendon Vegetable Garden Courtyard
This 53’ x 56’ garden flanks the corner lot of a 1910 house designed by Eden Smith for iconic Canadian artist Lawren Harris. The present owner of the property had laid a foundation for the garden with eight fruit trees in the hopes of starting a tiny urban orchard. This soon grew into a desire for a productive food garden that would enhance the arts and crafts house, provide home grown sustenance, and satisfy a desire for an intense pastime.
The vegetable list was carefully developed to flourish in the garden’s shade conditions. The beds have also been separated into manageable chunks to allow the owner to farm at different rates and times, fostering crop rotations and allowing a series of ornamental ensembles to develop in each bed.
The ground was resurfaced with black crushed granite to ensure that open, treed areas would feel like a courtyard. The custom benches with stone table is the centerpiece of this new dining area which is intimately nestled in the vegetable garden.
