Our clients sought light-filled, cohesive, unfussy space for themselves and their two young children, with better connectivity to their back garden. We replaced a small, tacked-on mudroom with a highly functional yet polished space that combines ample concealed storage with with bench seating, in-floor heating, and a slate floor. This new mudroom opens onto an outdoor dining area, which steps down to an Eramosa limestone patio. On the second floor, the mudroom addition made it possible to add a walkout balcony play area to one of the children’s bedrooms.
In the breakfast room adjacent to the mudroom, we replaced the garden-facing window with a much larger one and extended the glazing around the corner. The bench seating is bamboo plywood, the new window and door frames are Douglas fir, and a deep slate blue is the accent colour that ties the entire composition together.
We also renovated the residence’s front entry, adding a new slate floor and in-floor heating and replacing an undersized closet with a more open storage unit.
