Woodlawn Residence
Renovations to this three-storey downtown house included interior and façade renovations, an expansion of the third floor dormer, and millwork—all focused on linking the newly interconnected interior with the stunning views to the ravine. This was achieved by carefully crafting the window connections to the rear—including the continuous tree house-like panorama of the third-floor master bedroom and ensuite—and inserting a sequence of light and diaphanous materials such as frosted glass panels and windows (all side windows were frosted to ensure the view was ravine-focused), and a metal coil curtain perpendicular to the ravine view. In addition to wall slots, this lighting, mirroring and layering of colours create a variable interior that is phenomenologically complex as the panels provide spatial definition while tying the spaces to the larger context of the ravine through their reflective or semi-transparent surfaces. The sliding coil curtain panel with its alternate front or backlighting appears either as a translucent, shimmering screen, or as an apparent wall between the kitchen and dining area. Although the third-floor bedroom is smaller due to the walk-in closet and bathroom, the space actually appears much larger thanks to the continuous panoramic window, sliding frosted panels and mirror-joined bedroom and bathroom.
