Galley Kitchen - META Gold Award

A narrow galley kitchen needed an upgrade. The layout of the home, budget and preservation of the existing style dictated that no walls could be moved. Focus was given to the cabinets, counters and appliances. This project received Gold for Residential Kitchen Remodel in the 2011 META Awards (sponsored by NARI Silicon Valley).

Since the walls of the kitchen were not changing, the focus was on the cabinets, counters and appliances. The counters are made of custom fabricated cement that was tinted.

In order to keep the design a little more sleek, custom panels were fitted to the refrigerator. A pantry cabinet was stained in a darker color so as to tie in to the older feel of the home.

A professional grade range by Bertazzoni catered to the clients love of cooking. A custom hood shroud help the appliance blend into the background. A custom niche was placed in the wall to showcase art.

Since the counters were custom fabricated, an integrated drain board could be placed next to the sink. The sink is pounded copper. An existing window frame was kept to tie into the older style of the home.

A closer look at the range area shows the integrated hot plate feature. This item was built into the cement counter. Grooves were cast in, then stainless steel bars filled them.

Since one exit from the kitchen leads to the utility room, a sliding door with obscure glass was used. This hides the washer/dryer from guests entering from the other end...yet still lets light in from the rear of the house.

The clients love of wine and beer gave us the chance to create a special nook for beverage serving. A refrigerated beer keg is under the counter, with a tap built into the butcher block counter top. Wine storage and utensils are placed in the cabinetry, along with a pull out cutting board.

The long and narrow character of the kitchen was not changing, so the cabinet and appliance layout was the main focus of the remodel.
