Glen Ellyn Residence

After purchasing the adjoining lot, these homeowners wanted to unify the property through a new landscape. Initially hiring a garden designer, a plan was designed to connect the garden spaces. Once we made revisions to the original plan, we were contracted to do the installation. In addition to the plantings, drainage issues were addressed with PVC pipes and a dry creek bed. Following the installation, the homeowners were so pleased with the outcome they hired us for all future projects.

The next year, renovations on the inside of the house lead to new projects for the outside. A larger, covered front porch was added creating the need for a new brick walk and plantings that would compliment the updated entry. Plantings continued down the side of the house along with a flagstone path and cutstone wall. A design for the back was developed to be in tune with the scale of the house and property; orientated in a way to enjoy the views of the gardens and encourage guests to experience them. A larger deck would accommodate a dining area and lead down to a raised patio. The patio, intended to be an outdoor living room, was designed to have a mortared seatwall and columns.

Mature Oaks on this established lot were treated with extra attention as to not disturb them during construction. A protective layer of mulch was laid down to minimize compaction and root damage from equipment traffic. Construction started in the fall, pouring all cement footings for the patio, seatwall, and a gazebo. This enabled a timely start the following spring, making the early May deadline possible. While wintering in Florida, the homeowners decided to add an outdoor fireplace. After communicating via email, sending plans and 3D renderings, a fireplace design was finalized over the winter. Additional cement footings were poured in the spring when the project resumed. During construction of the project, the homeowners still being in Florida, progress reports and onsite changes were made with the use of video-chatting technology. The end result was made possible through a great collaboration between staff and the homeowners.
