Oak Brook Residence

Wanting to update the landscaping at this newly remodeled Oak Brook residence, the client had some very specific desires for her new property. A new front entry would be surrounded by plantings that were designed specifically to be manicured, but softened with splashes of color to maintain the cottage feel of the home. A brick walk connects the driveway to the back yard and wanders through an enclosed area used as a dog run for the homeowner’s large dogs. The entertaining spaces located in the back needed to be all one level for handicap access and large enough to accommodate space for eating as well as lounging. A separate space for a fire pit patio was also on the list of wants, but was connected to the main patio area by a flagstone walk for ease of access. The back half of the property was overgrown, and after selecting mature trees to be saved, layers of smaller shrubs and perennials were added to compliment the existing woodland look.

The timing of the installation mandated that half of the project be completed the following spring. All hardscapes were constructed and completed, while only trees and shrubs were planted and mulched in for the winter. Perennials and sod were planted when warmer weather returned.

A large pond and several invasive plants were cleared from the backyard before construction began. Healthy mature trees were left throughout the yard and along the property line as well as a few under story plants that eventually would be filled in with many layers of new plantings.

Planting beds layered with shrubs and perennials and an expansive lawn required an irrigation system to be subcontracted and coordinated during the different phases of installation.

Specific shrubs were chosen for the foundation that could be maintained as hedges to keep with the desired formal look that the homeowner enjoys. To enhance the country feel of the house, a variety of perennials were chosen to add texture and color.

The addition of brick banding gives a clear delineation of the circular asphalt driveway from the cul-de-sac. The tumbled country style brick compliments the architecture and style of the newly remodeled home.

A natural stone walk was designed to separate the two paved entertaining areas, and was laid with tightly fitting joints so it could be easily navigated by the physically handicapped homeowner.

A low spot in the backyard was addressed by creating a large planting area and dry creek bed that would direct water away from the lawn areas. The entire property has been transformed into manicured woodlands, with a variety of eye catching textures and colors.

A brick walk leads from the side driveway through an enclosed dog run area to the back entertaining spaces. Pet safe plants were added to both entrances and throughout the dog run so as to soften the line of the fence and make the area less utilitarian.

Once the total remodel of this older home was completed, the makeover of the entire landscape could begin. It was the homeowner’s desire to update the entire landscape to compliment their newly remodeled home.

The construction of the house was completed late in the season leaving little time to deal with inclement weather. A few select mature trees were left to add structure to the front of the large house, while a small natural border remained along the back property line for privacy.

A short brick walk is flanked by manicured shrubs to maintain a formal front entry that leads to the covered porch. Splashes of color render a welcoming feel. At the homeowner’s request, a stone border lines the entire foundation in order to keep the house clean of mulch.

Columns punctuate the seat wall that encloses one of the lounging areas on the main patio. Pots of seasonally changing annuals add color throughout the paved area. The entire area was designed on one level, only one step out the door was done to ensure easy maneuverability throughout the area.

An outcropping wall accents an informal sitting area adjacent to the driveway that is separated from the street by plantings. Located across from the formal entry, this area acts as a gathering space for greeting or seeing guests off.
