North Beacon Kitchen

This lovely home in an historic neighborhood had been fairly well preserved, but the new homeowners were committed to bringing back to life even more of its beautiful character. The kitchen remodel focused on maintaining some of the unique architectural elements of the space, while improving the function and the feel.

A photo taken from the stairs gives an idea of the flow to the space. It's not crowded, people can mingle in the kitchen without crowding the cook, and the cook now has much better views toward the dining room and living area. We're proud so much of the original character of the early 1900s house...

The cooking area is much improved with increased counter space and better storage.

Another element that maximized the useful counter space at the cooking area was the decision to use a 24" cook top. This model from Bertazzoni offers as much cooking space as many larger models.

We wanted to preserve the stairway but needed to find more wall space to put cabinets and counters. By converting the radiator to a toe kick heater we added a lot of cooking space. The blue hood blocked views.

The walkway to the dining room was made smaller by out of date pipe chases in the ceiling and walls. We ended up covering the brick chimney.

The stairs would get refinished and the wall cabinets would go. The radiator would also make way for a toe kick heater and cabinet.

Lighting updates and whitewashing the ceiling improved the brightness of the space. When the floor tile was removed we discovered beautiful wood that was refinished.

The fridge was a bulky item visible from the front entry way. We used a counter-depth model and put it in a bank of tall cabinets to streamline the space.
