Rustic Refrain

You don't have to spend much time in this beautiful country home to perceive this family's abiding love of the outdoors. The owners wanted to capture the rustic comfort of the mountain hunting and fishing lodges they love so much when they created this, their day-to-day home.

The special character of the Showplace rustic offerings is fully on display in this home. Wide variations in grain and color, along with natural knots, create an impression that is clearly casual and natural. The subtle addition of Ebony glazing adds a patina of timeworn aging and brings attention to rustic hickory's grain and knots.

The understated Pendleton door style has a historic flavor while the subtle accent of a sleek Charcoal molding treatment adds an up-to-date touch. The flowing, free-form layout is both functional and inviting. The large central island includes the cooktop and a small sink, and is punctuated on each end by Charcoal cabinets. Note the soft, weathered personality of the unique Showplace Charcoal finish. The beaded panel and Charcoal corbels add texture and contrast to the island and look great with the peeled-log stools.

Note how the wall and tall cabinet heights and depths step down and back, adding graceful visual flow. A tall cabinet separates the refrigerator from a handy desk area that includes an organizer and wall cabinets accented with botanical laminate panels.

The two-level peninsula offers prep and eating spaces and also creates a boundary with the adjacent great room. Granite-like laminate countertops and a tile backsplash contribute to a subtle and warm palette of textures and colors, right down to the rustic hickory hardwood floor. The Showplace botanical laminate panels add an extra element of outdoorsy character with their natural grasses embedded in durable laminates.

The tall cabinet near the dishwasher in the kitchen combines drawers and doors for flexible storage. The corner base cabinet houses a lazy susan, making good use of space that is often wasted. The pull-out wicker baskets are both attractive and functional. A unique Showplace creation provides a home for the television in the spacious great room adjacent to the kitchen. This media center uses an integrated end panel, and places the television on a sliding swivel. It looks right at home beside the soaring cultured stone fireplace and the exposed southern pine split logs.

The spacious master bath is inviting and warm in Showplace Lyptus. Note the Mahogany-like character and varying tones of this unique wood species. The Pendleton W door style that appears here is a wider-framed variation of the door style used in the kitchen.

The whirlpool tub is bracketed by a pair of tall Lyptus cabinets with botanical laminate panels. End panel boxes bump out from these cabinets while moldings wrap around the top. The end result is a unique and attractive impression of depth and character.

The guest bath repeats the rustic hickory found in the kitchen but utilizes the raised-panel Covington door style for a more traditional personality. The handsome Showplace vanity mirror frame adds a stylish touch.

Lyptus and hickory both display wide variation in coloration and grain, Lyptus tends toward warmer tones, while hickory exhibits a more golden cast.

Lyptus appears again in the compact but well thought-out laundry room. Note the unique grain of Showplace Lyptus, and how optional Showplace distressing gives the cabinetry softened edge profiles and the subtle impression of aging. Rustic hickory was used again in the bedrooms for the handsome dresser and built-in storage units.
