Our kitchen remodeling work usually begins with replanning the existing space. In this home, we changed a galley kitchen that felt like a hallway into an island kitchen with great storage and functionality at three walls. Our client, a professional dietician who loves to entertain, mentioned straightaway how difficult it was to have people over because everybody liked to hang out in the kitchen while she cooked, and they were always in the way. When we asked what her dream kitchen looked like, her first response was that she’d always wanted an island. We thought these two notions – new space plan + new island - synchronized perfectly. Originally built in 1910, this charming cottage home had been added on to over the years, resulting in that “hallway kitchen” and another design misfire or two. With our new plan, we improved how the rooms flow together, eliminated a bathroom door to increase privacy at the family room, and reconsidered furniture placement.
