Tumbled Slate Master Bathroom Retreat

The subtle color of tumbled slate adds warmth and an artistic flair to this Pacific Northwest master bathroom. New fixtures were installed at similar locations, the vanity was expanded to add much-needed counter space, and a shower column with a bold metallic tile finish provides drama -- and a new location for the shower head. Heated floors, wall-mounted faucets, a relaxing air bath tub with a heated back rest, and a towel warmer add warmth and the feel of luxury in this Pacific Northwest master bathroom.

Brizo Virage wall faucets are mounted to an added wall wrapped with octagon-and-dot tumbled slate tile from Lunada Bay Tile. Dura Supreme Cabinetry in knotty alder with rattan center panels adds texture.

Tumbled Slate envelops the Bain Ultra air bath tub, then wraps the lower section of the shower and finishes the wall behind the soap and lotion shelves in the shower niche. A Mixology by Crossville metallic pencil liner tile is installed between the slate and the porcelain tile above.

This drop-down teak shower seat is handy, attractive, and folds out of the way when not in use. We used a combination of octagon-and-dot tiles with 2x2 square tiles to finish the soap niche at the shower.

Kohler's Verdera medicine cabinets are paired with Robern's MTFL Series vertical light fixtures, then wall-mounted above the faucet ledge in a custom framed/shelf cabinet that matches the Dura Supreme vanity cabinetry.

It was a bit tricky, but it just seemed right to carry that bit of tile above the countertop through to the vanity ledge wall.

Soft earth tones combine in the "prairie" color palette from Lunada Bay Tile. This tumbled slate is called "octagon-and-dot" pattern.

Mixing 2x2 tiles with the octagon-and-dot pattern seemed more interesting, and certainly led to cleaner lines at the edges. We used these two materials together throughout the bathroom.

Placing Crossville's Mixology pencil liner between the slate and the porcelain tile makes for a clean transition. Notice the different tile materials used inside the recessed soap niche (and a big thank you to the very helpful tile installer).

Antares porcelain tile in "nero" color features a metallic surface that adds bold drama to this shower column. The thermostatic shower valve and diverter blend into the finish. A grab bar looks great and adds safety.
