This home had great potential but was badly in need of an update. The oak cabinetry was not only outdated but was falling apart. As is typical with homes of this era, the house was compartmentalized into little rooms - a family room, a kitchen, a dining room. Considering the size of the house, the kitchen was very small.
The first solution to opening up the space was to tear down the wall separating the kitchen and dining room. Then the wall between the family room and kitchen was also partially opened to create one large living space. Finally, a small addition was built to really create an expansive space.
White cabinetry was used to keep the kitchen bright. The island provides a nice contrast, and was custom matched to existing cabinetry in the family room which had only been installed a few years ago. The unique pendants over the island nicely pick up the colour of the island. The custom copper hood is truly a showstopper. A small bar area is conveniently located near the family room so that guests can help themselves to drinks.
This kitchen contains many storage accessories to that make life more convenient, including a pullout garbage/recycling, spice drawer organizer, cutlery drawer organizer, wicker baskets in the island, and of course plenty of drawers.
This project also included a laundry room and a couple of bathrooms. The master bathroom is shown in these photos. Again, the room went from dark and dated to clean and bright.
