The Country Abode

Stone and Pine undertook the major redesign of this cookie-cutter bungalow in the country. The objectives were clear: fantastic one-floor living with a primary suite, accentuate the views of the surrounding rolling hills, offer varied and expansive outdoor spaces for entertaining, unite the kitchen and living room spaces, add a large indoor pool and exercise space, and a 4-car garage. On the lower level: a guest room with an ensuite and walkout, covered outdoor space, ample storage and most importantly, a design that didn't feel like it was a basement.

Working with the idea that the house was loosely based on a mid-century modern design, the home’s characteristics took on a modern, bright and lofty feel.

The finished product: a 3-bedroom bungalow is nestled in the countryside, with just over 4300 sq ft of space, the original floor plate being 1500sq ft.

The new structure was built with ICF block, with radiant-heated polished concrete floors. Other features include a double-sided fireplace in the great room and pool deck, a vaulted kitchen/great room that bridged the original house with the addition, dotted with skylights to add to the feeling of space and luminosity. Covered spaces on the front and the back of the house added shade and a visual distraction to the rectangular feel of the original structure.

The other elephant in the room was bridging the old structure with the new one, merging rooflines, and utilizing materials that unified the design and made it congruent. Creating a home with an indoor pool is a challenge - designing one that looks like it doesn't have an indoor pool in it - is dear to my design sensibilities. But starting with such a small home made this even more of a mountain to overcome, especially adding in the want of a 4-car garage.

The main floor principal suite was designed with an ensuite bath with a large vanity space, water closet, steam shower and his and her walk-through closets, with defined privacy in one wing of the house. The biggest change was the pool and wellness space with 20’ slanted ceilings, a saltwater pool and indoor hot tub, and the integrated 4-car garage.
