This client’s kitchen is a very large space, however, the last renovation made built walls within the kitchen that made the space seem closed in and limited. The kitchen was done well using traditional painted lime oak cabinets. The wall cabinets were all stacked, which is a nice design, however this added to the closed in feeling of the kitchen.

The goal for the new kitchen was to open up the space by removing the internal walls and to have a more open and light yet sophisticated design. We had to do some exploratory “surgery” by cutting open the walls in order to see what we had to deal with. Of course there were pipes and ducts that needed to be moved. After the go ahead from the contractor, we went forward with the design.

The client thought that the only way to get a light kitchen was to go with a white painted cabinet which is basically what she had before. She saw a picture of our award winning Biedermier cherry kitchen, and fell in love with that look. Since it felt a little dark, she just wasn’t sure. When I showed her that we could get that same style using figured Sycamore (which is a very beautiful light wood), she flipped over the idea and felt ready to keep moving forward.

We found that with the walls removed, this kitchen was a perfect candidate for two islands, which work wonderfully since it allows for great traffic flow along with a lot of counter space. We started with the range, which, already had its own alcove, and, then designed a magnificent hood in the appropriate style, working out way out to the flanking cabinets. Stacking the cabinets and adding the sunburst seemed like a natural addition since the ceilings are so high. To make up for the lack of wall cabinet space, we added very wide, but, narrow pantry storage on the outside walls, this really helped with storage.
