Contemporary Kitchen in Silver Spring, Maryland

Silver Spring, Maryland - Contemporary - Kitchen Designed by #JenniferGilmer

Removing walls that cut off the kitchen from the breakfast area opened up this kitchen to more natural light and created the open floor plan these clients desired. Rather than stacking double ovens on the wall of the long kitchen, Gilmer placed them side by side, leaving space above for vibrant orange-tinted glass tile. On the kitchen’s other two walls, Gilmer chose rough-cut atone tiles that complement the gray cabinetry and warm butcher block on the island. They give the kitchen a more natural feel, and it’s a nice frame for this beautiful splash of color, Gilmer explains. We’re a very kitchen- and food-centric family, the homeowner says of her husband and three kids, who keep kosher and entertain every Jewish holiday. This is really a great change—it’s like night and day from the original kitchen. Dark grey slab front cabinetry surrounds the perimeter of the kitchen and island in a warm tone. A mixture of floating shelves and varied-depth, suspended, wall cabinets keep the storage from becoming too overwhelming. Wood countertops on both sides of the island invite casual diners while the center portion is topped with soapstone and serves as a preparation surface. Chunky handles can withstand heavy use and add a bit of glamour to the slab fronts. On the oven wall, bright white cabinetry hides a bevy of small appliances. Electrical outlets within the cabinet and a countertop extension make this space a work surface. Doors on either side slip back into the cabinet so they do not intrude upon the passageway as you leave the kitchen proper.
