Asian Sanctuary

The clients wanted a Japanese style garden to reflect their heritage. I used the traditional Japanese garden elements of stone and water to create a dry stream bed that would snake through the grounds and unify the large space.

A dry stream bed meanders through the garden. By day tranquil, at night the low voltage lights skim the tops of the rocks and simulate burbling water.

Perppermint Willow (Agonis flexuosa) is planted along the perimeter walls to give the garden complete privacy. A sinuously curving grass area is a beautiful foil to the many large trees while a lantern beckons in the distance.

A trio of Blue Spruce and a Deodar Cedar ground this area. A variety of Junipers, Dwarf Mugo Pine, Japanese Barberry and Pittosporum are placed strategically.

Many different sizes of rocks and boulders were placed with utmost care to mimic the way a natural stream would look with small grasses and carexs lining the sides.

In the stately entrance, antique terra cotta pots hold a variety of exotic tropical plants that thrive in the indirect sun.

Outside the library is a private little zen garden that is separated from the main space by a low boxwood hedge. It has a bare simplicity with only a stone bench under an olive tree, some large boulders and a gravel floor.
