Although the view was spectacular, the forlorn concrete patio didn't do it justice. The clients, a busy doctor and nurse, needed a place to relax, entertain and wash away the day’s stress. We created 2 levels of patios, an upper paved patio off the house and a lower deck below in the canyon. The capacious deck features a Jacuzzi with a custom-built pergola, a dining area, and a custom bench and fire pit. Breaking up the expanse of Bluestone paving are raised planter beds which create intimate areas while still allowing plenty of room for hosting parties and get-togethers. The upper level has a Mediterranean plant palette using a soothing combination of lavenders, yarrow, catmint and grasses. The lower deck and hillside uses California native plants almost exclusively, creating a wildlife sanctuary. A myriad of birds visit the garden ranging from owls, finches and a veritable colony of hummingbirds.
