Sophisticated Mid-City Residence
My clients had recently purchased their newly refurbished home in a quaint Mid-City neighborhood and wanted to make their outdoor spaces reflect their stylish interiors while, at the same time, lowering their carbon footprint.
I chose a crisp and sophisticated black, white, and gray color palette with a formal symmetrical design for the front to compliment the classic house. The slope was flattened, and a low stucco retaining wall built to create a level pathway to the front door. A new, dramatic entrance niche with steps wide enough to accommodate two graphic urns and a handsome gate greets visitors.
The entrance gate and electric car gate provide the security needed. An opulent ceramic urn centered in the geometric design became the glamorous focal point of the front.
In the back, a Trex deck and a pergola with decorative screen sides create shade and privacy from neighbors while asymmetrical steps add whimsey. The deck, despite its generous size, doesn’t overwhelm the small yard and a sleek fire pit creates another tranquil destination in the backyard. We created a peaceful sanctuary where they can walk outside their bedroom doors and sip their morning coffee under the shade of the pergola or enjoy wine with friends by the heat of the fire at night.
The formality of the design is offset by a playful paver arrangement and its juxtaposition against the feathery and effervescent plants provide a soothing but energetic contrast.
