Cottage Garden Fusion

This charming Spanish Colonial Revival home located in an Historic Overlay Zone was a gem but its garden was neglected and forlorn. The front entrance was off to the side and, lacking a path to it, unwelcoming. We moved the entrance to face the front and constructed a curving brick path to it surrounded by a sea of coral roses. The depressing side yard was turned into a verdant tropical oasis and the back a delightful spot to relax replete with the gentle burbling of a fountain. Even the unused front courtyard became a place to stop with its own water feature and container garden.

This narrow back area was dull and boring. By treating the wall with a Mediterranean wall treatment and placing a fountain, a focal point has been created, as well as a wonderful place to sit and drink coffee or read a book while listening to the soothing sounds of the water.

Pendulous blooms of Brugmansia candida drip from a tree underplanted with Lamb's Ear and Calla Lily. Against the wall, Podocarpus gracilior creates a privacy barrier (which was previously sorely lacking) between my client and her neighbor.

Adding the new trellis created a private space for the hammock. Painted a soft green, it compliments the warm tones of the wall and paving. The old brick had to be scraped and sanded by hand to get rid of the old paint but the effect was well worth it.
