Mountain Vista
Although the space was a good size, the expansive view made it feel open and exposed. My intent was to create a cozy place where my clients could warm themselves by a fire while enjoying the breathtaking setting. I also wanted to create ample casual seating despite the confines of the space. If I wrapped a bench around the perimeter, it would enclose the area and afford extra seating without spoiling the view. I wanted to integrate the bench and built-in kitchen to create one large installation with two focal points. The bench curves gracefully around the space and connects with the kitchen area. It ‘exits’ the other side in a little perch under the tree. The fire bowl, which nestles in the circular part of the bench, is oversized so that it won’t be overwhelmed by the open space. By switching the material for the bench seat in front of the fire bowl from concrete to wood slats, I highlighted that area and made it more of a focal point. I defined the Kitchen space by flanking it with two integrated pillars that could be used as a platform for plants or decorative objects. The backsplash is a graphic black and white encaustic tile. Behind it all, a Mangaris wood fence ties in with the house, and other wood elements. A stand-alone curvy wood and concrete bench is placed in the grass area to create another spot to watch the sunset or for extra seating.
