Topanga Canyon Hideaway
My clients wanted a beautiful and chic outdoor space where they could relax and play and take advantage of their beautiful canyon views. We needed to address the tired and outdated landscape and renovate the pool and impractical jacuzzi. They also had drainage issues that left parts of their yard soggy all year round.
We paved the pool deck with stylish Stepstone pavers and delineated the fire bowl with a sweeping curve of color. Sitting at the fire bowl provides a birds’ eye view of the amazing canyon views. The pool was updated with a larger and more modern jacuzzi as well as new tile and Pebble-Tec finish. The existing pergola was rebuilt with simpler lines and earthy colors and the plants are a combination of California natives and Mediterranean. I took advantage of a shady corner under a mature Sweet Gum tree and created a seating area with a custom concrete bench and curved decomposed granite patio with gorgeous views. Surrounded by the plants, it's a cool and shady place to relax. We also built custom redwood raised vegetable beds with steps to create a kitchen garden for my clients and their children.
A rain garden filled with grasses and grass-like plants lies at the base of the planted slope to collect the water that comes from the rest of their yard, their uphill neighbors’ yard and their downspouts during rain storms. This allows the water to remain on their property and slowly percolate down into the water table below in the Watershed Approach – a sustainable method of collecting stormwater.
