Contemporary Boulder Residence

This contemporary home sits on a hill in an area of older 1950's homes, just north of downtown Boulder. The site slopes severely to the south and due to height limitation issues, the floor plate had to be very compact, yet accommodate the clients desire to maximize the square footage.

The solution was a 3-story, 6,500 square foot house including a walk-out lower level. The main level was designed as the family living level including garage, entry, kitchen, dining, great room, and entertaining deck. The lower level includes a home theater, bar area, game area, exercise/spa space, and a guest suite. Outside is a splash pool and hot tub. The third floor is the family's sleeping level which includes the master bedroom with an office, private deck, and two identical bedrooms/bathrooms for kids.

The character of the house needed to be very contemporary due to the clients’ tastes in art and furniture. The majority of the views are to the south, however light needed to come into the house from all directions without compromising privacy. The solution was high bands of glass at the ceiling level of the main and upper levels with floor to ceiling glass on the south side.

Due to having high bands of glass, the ceilings had to be fairly high but were limited by Boulder's height regulations. Therefore, a flat roof was necessary. These flat roofs were designed to "float" visually on the bands of glass. The exterior is a mixture of limestone, stucco, mahogany, and glass juxtaposed to best articulate the facades.
