ECLECTIC RANCH HOUSE

A southern California traditional Ranch House that has not been touched since the 1970’s received a complete makeover in order to bring it into the new century.

The project’s starting point was a dark and uninviting dwelling with brown patterned walls, thick shag carpeting and an overall lack of daylight. Some of the rooms had lowered, heavily coffered ceilings, which added to the feeling of it being gloomy and claustrophobic. The kitchen and bathrooms were never upgraded either, and were not only outdated but also dysfunctional. It was evident that this house needed a complete renovation and some structural changes in order to serve today’s lifestyle.

The new home owners, a well traveled family of Indian and American heritage, were looking for a modern, mid-century inspired space that could incorporate their vast collection of furniture and artifacts from India, Africa, China and other countries, while also accommodating their inherited American antiques and equestrian items that have been in the family for a long time.

Sylvia Beez, head designer at m.a.p. interiors, took on the challenge of transforming the space into a modern and comfortable home for her clients. Walls were removed where possible, as well as the low and heavy ceilings, in order to guarantee a more open flow. Several of the rooms were opened up with vaulted ceilings and added skylights. All windows and doors were replaced with new ones. The designer chose to have the underlying concrete floor polished to create a cool urban atmosphere. Other new flooring materials included natural slate tiles in the entry and two bedrooms as well as wood style ceramic tiles in the living room. The floors and all other surface materials needed to be practical and durable in order to withstand the family’s dogs.

The fireplaces in the family and living room received a complete makeover too; one with hexagonal stamped concrete and the latter with distressed wood-look tiles. They form interesting focal points in both rooms with their new clean-lined design.

The kitchen and all bathrooms have been gutted and rebuilt from scratch in a contemporary style.
The kitchen was kept open and bright with custom made cabinetry, Caesarstone countertops, a handmade mosaic glass backsplash, and stainless steel appliances. A large custom designed island serves both as prep space and in-kitchen dining.
The master bathroom has been given a Zen spa feel with contemporary wood-style tiles and glass mosaic accents. A darker color scheme creates a calm and collected atmosphere of relaxation. Sculptural copper vessel sinks add to the look.

The interior design of the Eclectic Ranch House is a vibrant mix of old and new, rustic and sleek, American and International. Most of the new purchased furniture pieces were modern classics or Bauhaus style, as they worked well with both the architectural style of the house and the owner’s antiques. Together with the global artifacts a truly eclectic mix of style and culture has been created and accomplished.
