FRANKLIN KITCHEN

The kitchen in this 1908 home was the hub of the family’s daily activities from meals, entertaining friends and family, charging devices, feeding the dogs, and opening mail. The existing layout was not conducive to multiple people being in the space at the same time. They wanted a kitchen that would accommodate these activities with ease and allow room to move as friends and family gather for casual Friday night meals or important holidays.

Removing a secondary staircase and converting the main floor bath to a powder room allowed for an expanded kitchen for this family of 4. A beamed ceiling brings visual interest and speaks to the era of the home while the warm white cabinetry keeps the space light and bright.
FRANKLIN KITCHEN
The original kitchen layout was disjointed and created a zig-zag traffic flow that disrupted the work triangle. The efficient layout of the new kitchen provides improved circulation, ample counter space, as well as island seating.

The refrigerator and pantry were relocated making way for a beverage bar complete with refrigeration and a bar sink. Located out of the way of the kitchen work triangle, this dedicated space supports everything from morning coffee to cocktail prep for the adjoining dining room.

The original space felt dark and closed off. In the updated kitchen, wall cabinetry is consolidated to either end of the space and new, large windows bring in ample natural light. Open shelves provide additional storage for everyday use items.

In the original kitchen valuable counter space was taken up by small appliances. Out of the way of the main work zones, small appliances are now consolidated into one space and concealed behind bifold doors for easy access at countertop height.

Previously disjointed from the rest of the kitchen, this corner now serves as a hardworking cooking zone. A new range hood also functions as a display area for art, the walnut-lined bookcase provides cookbook storage and the tall cabinet serves as a shallow pantry.

Placement of appliances in the original kitchen created door swing conflicts and counter space and storage in the cooking area was limited.

The view as you entered the kitchen from the front hallway of the home highlighted the opportunity to better utilize the ceiling height and create a view point from the front to rear of the home.

A disjointed section of countertop provided the only ample work surface yet also had to also function as storage space for small appliances.
