Hilltop Arts & Crafts

A very fine house in a rural setting south of Eugene. Great views of the Coast Range. Arts and Crafts inspired. The kitchen was featured in Fine Homebuilding issue #175.

This maple topped island is a real workstation, while allowing for stools for friend at the end. At the other end the lower granite counter provides for kneading dough. The two big pull-outs below are for recycling. Photos are by Charles Miller of Fine Homebuilding.

From the breakfast area, the kitchen is partially visible. The glass cabinet opens on both sides for dishes and the black granite top provides a place for serving food. Photos are by Charles Miller of Fine Homebuilding.

This master bathroom has French limestone floors, counters and wainscoting. The cabinets are American cherry and the rest of the trim is Douglas Fir. Photos are by Charles Miller of Fine Homebuilding.

The pantry is located on the west side of the kitchen, near the refrigerator and with no door. The lighting is controlled by a motion sensor that turns the light on when you enter and off when you leave. The open shelves make it easier to quickly find things.

Across the island
On this side of the kitchen is the cleanup zone consisting of a big sink with a drainboard over the dishwasher and a trash compactor. The deep drawers are for flatware, plates and bowls.

The range and the island across from it is the prep area. Tools are located in the island and hang above the range under the hood. On the left side of the range is a side-loaded pullout for oils and other bottles needed while cooking.

The kitchen connects to the Family Room
Across the house diagonally from the kitchen is the family room. The stone fireplace is flanked by a wet bar on the left and the TV on the right in the corner.

The stand up desk is located at the entrance to the kitchen and along the main path through the house. It is "command central" with phone, internet, battery charging, datebook and cookbooks.

The kitchen sits in a large bay with windows on 3 sides. It's directly adjacent to the main entry and one can see visitors coming up the walk. On the south side there is a door to a porch where meals can be taken outside.

Close up of the exterior of the kitchen from the main entry path. Above the kitchen roof is a second floor porch that is accessed from the main second floor hall at the top of the stairs. It has great morning light. This whole facade faces east.
