Meadow Cabin

A 1,600 square foot cabin set on the edge of a meadow in the mountains of eastern Washington State. The cabin is nestled into a small grove of trees in the middle of a large river valley. The cabin is orientated to capture territorial and mountains views while blocking unwanted views of adjacent homes. The living and dining rooms are in a 2 story space with windows all around. This space opens to patios on 3 sides through large sliding doors. One of the patios has an outdoor fire place. The back half of the house is more enclosed and contains the kitchen, bedroom, bathrooms and other utility spaces. The upper floor has a loft and a screened sleeping porch. A small detached carport and storage area is located through the stand of trees. The storage area also doubles as a wax room as the local cross country ski trail is located steps from the cabin.
Both the cabin and garage take shape as unadorned shed forms relating to the vernacular farm structures in the area. The exterior building materials are kept simple. The siding is rough sawn cedar channel siding and the roofs are standing seamed galvanized steel. Large overhangs with log columns provide entry porches and patios to both provide protection from the winter snow and summer heat. The wood windows, trim, and log columns all are sealed in a clear finish. The concrete patios are integrally colors to blend in with the surrounding vegetation. This slab continues inside as the finished floor for the main level of the cabin. The hearth is prominent as a sculptural form on both the interior and exterior of the cabin. On the exterior, it contains an outdoor fireplace and wood storage. On the inside, it houses a small energy efficient wood stove and media center.
