Medina Remodel
This remodel of an existing structure created a 5500 sf home in Medina, WA. Relocating from Mexico, this family of five was looking to settle in the suburban community of Medina. They had previously built an ultra-modern home in Mexico and were concerned with the time involved in building from scratch; they decided to look for an existing home that they could transform into a comfortable dwelling that fit their modern lifestyle and tastes. They came across a large, virtually single-level home oriented around a protected outdoor living area with pool. Initially attracted to the single-level plan and secluded rear yard, the home had all of the basic programmatic elements they were looking for, it just needed to be re-worked aesthetically -- or so they thought. What began as a minor cosmetic remodel quickly turned into a full “gut” remodel.
A primary goal was to unite the protected and private rear yard with the living spaces inside, creating a strong connection to the outdoors, something this family was used to from their home in Mexico. In addition, this family wanted to create more of a modern open floor plan concept throughout the house. This was accomplished by reconfiguring the majority of the interior walls, leaving the programmatic elements in essentially the same spot but rethinking the connections between them.
What was once a somewhat drab, traditional interior was quickly stripped down to a few basic modern elements. Trim was minimized, and walls and ceilings were rendered in a single tone of white allowing the natural wood door openings and panels as well as the client’s art collection, to stand out. In an effort to simplify while maintain unity throughout the spaces of the house, one species of wood, horizontally oriented, rift-sawn white oak was selected for all of the exposed natural millwork. In the formal areas of the house, Milestone was used as a seamless floor finish, transitioning to wide plank White Ash in the family areas and bedrooms, where more warmth was desired.
The landscape design of the rear yard was critical to ensure an inviting almost seamless transition from the interior to exterior of the home, a primary goal for the clients. Milestone floors were carried from the interior of the living and dining rooms out onto the existing large aggregate concrete slabs, creating a smooth seamless surface. As the terrace steps down to the pool area the material transitions to an extensive Ipe deck that wraps the pool edge, providing a more comfortable transition when sliding in and out of the water. The existing board and batt fence was painted out a dark color to match the house and fade into the background, while a series of powder-coated white steel and back-lit translucent panels do double duty, creating visual interest while providing screening along the property edge.
